Loggins and Messina Then and NOW
Maui News
Thursday, October 6, 2005
by Jon Woodhouse

What does [Messina] love most?

“It’s a combination of hearing our voices singing together, feeling our music and seeing how the music affects the audience,” he concludes. “To see them react in joy and tears has made me appreciate what it is that I do and how it affects people in a positive way. What I love most is that together we have that effect. It’s a very positive experience that allows me to walk away feeling I contributed something to the world.”

Sittin' In Again At The Blaisdell

Reunion concerts don't get any better than Loggins & Messina's excellent two-hour, 45-minute concert Friday at Blaisdell Arena. Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina played everything their fans could ask for, from "Watching the River Run" and "House at Pooh Corner" to "Angry Eyes," "Your Mama Don't Dance" and "Danny's Song." They looked as though they were having a good time, did justice to all their best-known songs and got great support from their band...

During the best segment of the concert, called the General Store, Loggins & Messina performed an acoustic set highlighted by the 1969 tune "You Better Think Twice" from Messina's former country-rock band Poco and an equally terrific song, "Kind Woman," from his days with rock band Buffalo Springfield...

Loggins and Messina still have it -- all of it

...In short, you could say that Loggins and Messina and their first-rate six-piece backing band put on a clinic Saturday night at the Target Center. But not only for the jammers and the country-rockers, but also for those who have fallen prey to the separation of styles into market samples. For this duo mixed rock, folk, country, jazz, R&B, funk, soul and world music back in the day, and this concert offered a dose of liberation from the bonds of genre-specific programming ...

...in concert, the reunited duo's signature song was "Be Free," a dreamy seven-minute number that took flight from the get-go.

Mr. Messina's gorgeous turn on the mandolin, the pristine harmonies and a fiddle-fueled Celtic interlude made the song soar. It was a balm for the ears ...

Orange County Register Review

Sometime during their absence Loggins and Messina became one of the most overlooked live acts of the '70s. At their country- rockin', jammed-out best, this accidental outfit had far more in common with Crosby, Stills & Nash. See "Same Old Wine," which here proved to be a surprisingly still-trenchant commentary on the American political climate during war. It stands up to anything similar from CS&N's 1969 staple.

... you'll smile when the island groover "Vahevala" is followed by those creeping "Angry Eyes," ...

Then you'll start doing your homework, and stop giving Loggins & Messina a bad rap. CS&N would club seals to sound as strong these days. ocregister.com

Hometown Reunion
Loggins & Messina, Sittin’ In Again
Santa Barbara Bowl, Saturday, July 9

Reviewed by Felicia M. Tomasko

... Judging by the lively show the duo put on —a mix of sing-along favorites as well as some less familiar tunes from both artists— both nostalgia-seekers and newer fans were pumped ...this weekend after nearly 30 years of separate musical lives, they were as relevant and rockin’ as any of this decade’s bands.

Walking arm in arm off stage, they returned for two encores, closing with “Danny’s Song.” This is “the first song we played together,” Loggins announced. Their ending brought the duo full circle.

Loggins, Messina: 'They've Still Got It'
Connecticut Music

If the definition of a good pop/rock song is one with a lyrical hook and easy harmonies, then it was all good Wednesday night at the Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford as Kenny Loggins and Jim Messina took the audience for a trip in their way-back machine...

Maui Arts & Cultural Center - Maui, Hawaii

They were as awesome last night as they were 30 years ago -- I could close my eyes and it was like time had stopped -- great music is one of the things in this world that can make you feel that way and they were beyond great.

The rain started, as if on cue, during the second encore but it didn't keep me from leaving with a smile on my face and in my heart. Just pure L&M rock 'n roll -- it doesn't get any better -- especially with an excellent group of musicians and guests. Thank you Jim, thank you Kenny ... Susy

B.R. Cohn Winery - Glen Ellen, CA

When the song was over Kenny & Jim left the stage but the crowd would not stop, they wanted an encore, the only one of the day! Cohn sent them back out, Jim said "We don't have anything planned." Kenny ended the show with Conviction of the Heart which blew everyone away ... Sherry
